National DM2

The Engine in Almighty is a model DM2 built by the National Gas and Oil Engine Company of Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancashire. Thought to have been fitted in the early 60s this engine, number 000, is the model that Almighty would have been fitted with at launch but is not that original engine. In any case it would be rare for a boat to have its original engine as major overhauls were usually carried out by swapping out the engine with a replacement to minimise the time that the boat was not able to work.

National Engines were essentially a Russel Newberry made under license owing to the large numbers needed for the Grand Unoin Canal Company fleet modernisation in the 1930s when they ordered 256 pairs of boats from 3 different boatbuilders.

This particular engine, the heart of Almighty, is legendary as being very easy to start, is extremely reliable and hard working. It has recently had a new set of inlet valves fitted to the removable cages by Russell Newberry.

There is a spare National flywheel used a ballast!
